Millinery and the Mad Hatter?

Birdelli and her Hat
Birdelli and her Hat - ready to go!

No Mad hatters here- but indeed there must be crazed Royals running about. Perhaps reading the Poem of The Jabberwock to calm their nerves?
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe.
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I doubt it! Alas, back to topic, or off with someone’s head (as ordered from the Queen of Hearts!)

Speaking of tomorrows Royal Wedding it impossible not to chat about Hats today. UK and Hats = Royal Gala Events. USA and Hats = Couture Kentucky Derby. Many woman of The South love their hats.  Oh, how yummy a hat can be. In the “early days” – umm I mean up to the 40’s-50’s, “ladies” would not leave home with out a hat. Today hats have had a comeback – fun, funky, silly, outrageous, spectacular, sophisticated, extreme fashion, and magnificent. Everyone can find a hat to suit them in todays fashion. It may be a fashion statement, it may be a practicality, or it may be just be for a smile, all are good reasons to don a hat. Not everyone has a chance to wear an amazing hat made special for them from a millinery. Birdelli did! She went all out to find the perfect hat for the big day, and had it “custom made.” Although she was not invited to the Royal Wedding (shocking) , as the wonderful Fashion Designer she is, she feels the need to celebrate and dress for the occasion!

“The term “millinery” was not known until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when fine felt, fabric and straw hats were made in the Duchy of Milan and were known as ‘Millayne bonnets’. This is where the modern English word ‘Milliner’ comes from, as the London maker of these feminine caps and bonnets was called a ‘millianer’.

The Anglo-Saxon word for hat, Haet or haett appears to have signified the shape resembling the petasus; meaning, with crown, wide brim and easily removed from the head. Until the sixteenth century, any hat other than the ‘hood’ was a ‘cap’ in English, or a ‘bonnet’ in French. Only the Scotsman calls his cap a bonnet today. … The hat of today is really not much different to that of the 1700’s whereby it consists of a brim and/or crown. Some of the materials used today are different to those used in the past, which gives the difference in appearance, however, today’s milliners are prepared to take the craft that much further, and one Milliner, Phillip Treacy, who works out of London, leads the way with his innovative creations. Here is some of his work.” http://www.millinerytechniques.com/history-of-millinery.html

The phrase “as mad as a hatter” refers to the 19th century usage of a mercury-based compound in the making of fine hats. Due to long-term exposure, hatters would often develop symptoms of mercury poisoning, such as tremors or mood-swings, that would make them appear “mad” to others.” Luckily I believe todays hat makers have a better time of it all.

Birdelli “Vogued” in the window – Catch her if you can!

Birdelli is having a grand time in her “Fashion Week” – she snuck into one of Bergdorfs Windows , they are having a cross PR window. Clever.” Harkening back to an era when travel was more chic than chore, our Fifth Avenue windows invite you to enter the fantastical world of Frank Abagnale Jr. as he flees from the FBI in Broadway’s newest hit musical Catch Me if You Can. “ (http://blog.bergdorfgoodman.com/windows/catch-me-windows )  Well, Birdelli took that to heart; dressed her self up (all from Bergdorf’s of course) and “Vogued” in the window – Catch her if you can!

Birdelli is a busy gal this week – she went to Barneys and had a blast!

After she went she thought…hmmm, how green, or not, is Barneys New York? The Holiday Catalog 2007 was great, products were connected to charities. BIG Time in 2007 Barneys New York started it’s own green label. That is very good news. According to a web article Birdelii and I found (dated March 2007) “According to Barneys New York fashion director Julie Gilhart, Barneys New York is the “first high-end retailer to start [its] own green label.” It paired up with established organic denim designer Loomstate to create “lineup of sexy slip dresses, short-shorts, tanks, hoodies, jeans and minis made entirely from certified organic cotton and vegetable dyes.” (via Dallas Morning News)   The collection shown online offers a sparse collection. Perhaps on-the-ground stores have more?At first glance, Loomstate for Barneys Green features sporty, form-fitting pieces. Simple patterns, clean lines. All sales benefit 1% For The Planet and are exclusive to Barneys.”

We went and checked and were delighted to see that 4 years later the Loomstate Label is still alive and well on Barneys website. It is still not a vast collection but it is there clothing, a few pairs of shoes, and a wooden bowl and cutting board. Another good thing Barneys has is “Green& Spring” a Natural and active skin care handmade in the British countryside. The USA countryside would be nice, and a greener footprint for USA stores, but I also realize the chain is International as well.-

We went hunting on-line looking for more “green” and good fashion news. This was exciting news. Summer Rayne Oakes may have first gained recognition in the modeling world, but she’s more than a pretty face. When she’s not strutting down the catwalk, the multitasking multihyphenate is an author, a shoe designer, and a social entrepreneur. The thread that ties these disparate enterprises together becomes apparent with Oakes’ latest endeavor: Source4Style, a trade-only online marketplace that allows designers to find, compare, and buy sustainable textiles from a network of global suppliers at the touch of a button. Earlier this month, we snuck a peek at the upcoming site during a cupcake-filled preview in Brooklyn. Better yet, we managed to sidle up to Oakes herself to glean her thoughts about S4, sustainable fashion, and why community matters.”

An upcoming event in NYC sounds promising… Source for Style will be at the event-  Join Ecouterre, Hessnatur for an Eco-Fashion Event in NYC on April 27

Join Ecouterre and Hessnatur this Wednesday, April 27, for an intimate cocktail event at Relative Space in New York City. Schmooze with eco-fashion’s elite, peruse Hessnatur’s latest collection, and knock back some organic tipple. Plus, you’ll hear some of the industry’s brightest—including model-entrepreneur Summer Rayne Oakes, designers Clodagh and Eviana Hartman, Anne Keane from Lucky, Kate Sekules of ReFashioner, and Jill Fehrenbacher, our editor-in-chief—during a panel on “Why Eco-Fashion Matters.” Just one catch: You need to RSVP to chao@evynblock.com fairly soon. Spaces are limited and will be offered at a first-come-first-serve basis.

So we are glad there is awareness peeking out…. tomorrow – Fashion and a NYC major store window not just for Holiday time anymore!

This week's topic is Fashion. It seems appropriate for 3 reasons…

First would be the big “wedding across the pond” – and to see all the outfits – especially the hats(!) that will be strutting about, and how can one talk fashion this week and not wonder about the secret Wedding dress! Maybe they will surprise me and there will be a “green” element in the wedding and the fashion? According to AirDye (a favorite read of mine) … “you might think that green fashion would be a well-established idea by now. But you’d be wrong. There simply is no clear definition of eco-fashion. To some it means only hand-made, organically grown cotton, and vegetable dyes. To others, who we think are a bit more practical about the need for a scalable sustainable fashion industry, clothing made with recycled plastic bottles and high-tech dyes certainly qualify as sustainable fashion.”

Second …Well, The Botanicals are all excited for their very own Fashion Designer has moved to Botaniumus  – as a matter fact, she came to town TODAY!   Meet Birdelli – she will be modeling as well as designing for the gang of the Botanical Beauties and Beasties. Each day this week, she will be the spokeswoman, and featured Creature. Hello Birdelli!  Today Birdelli is featuring DNYK shoes, bag, belt and bracelet.

Third … even though the actual date for Spring was 3/20/2011 (Vernal Equinox) and Summer is a while off at 6/21/11 (Summer Solstice )– the reality has been slow coming up here in these parts.  Just about now, is when Spring and Summer clothes/fun is really entering into the real day-to-day. I must say – it is warm welcome from most of us. It was a long cold winter!
